Scott Dickerson in the World Wildlife Fund ‘08 Annual Report

December 29th, 2008 · No Comments

wwf-annualreport-08-cover The World Wildlife Fund’s  exceptionally beautiful 2008 Annual report was just released. Scott Dickerson is honored to have his photography work in the Mekong Delta region (Vietnam) featured as the illustration for a four page essay: ‘The Mekong – the river and more.’ The photographs are the result of an 18 day assignment Scott completed with WWF in April 2008 traveling throughout southern Vietnam photographing important environmental issues facing the region. Subjects photographed included catfish and shrimp farming, industrial development, agriculture, furniture processing, cocoa plantations, forestry and national parks. A special thanks to WWF US’s Jill Hatzai, Rochelle Howard and others who made the assignment possible.

The annual report also includes a Scott Dickerson photo of a commercial fishing boat in Bristol Bay. Scott has worked with WWF in Alaska on several assignments over the last three years, mostly focusing on the Bristol Bay area.

Scott Dickerson was assigned by the New York Times newspaper to photograph a midnight sun glacier hike in Girdwood, Alaska with Ascending Path. The thick gray overcast and drizzling rain conditions were far from ideal, but Scott did his best and the article ran with two images from the evening hike. The article was written by Bonnie Tsui.

The Surfer's Journal publishes ALASKAFOLIO - Alaskan surfing photos by Scott Dickerson.

The Surfer’s Path, an international surfing magazine, worked with Scott Dickerson to publish ALASKAFOLIO an eight page spread of photographs and words featuring Scott’s work in the Alaskan surf scene. The photographs are selection of previously unpublished highlights from several winter surf seasons. Scott was particularly excited to team up with with The Surfer’s Path for the debut of these unique photos because of the publications commitment not only to the spirit of surfing, but also the environment that surfers depend on.

From The Surfer’s Path website:

“The Surfer’s Path is the first (and, so far as we know, the only) truly “green” surf magazine. It’s printed on 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper (processed without chlorine bleach) with non-GMO soy inks. It was a move that – despite considerable extra expense – we simply had to make. It’s simple common sense: the survival of our surf spots is directly linked to the health of our rivers and streams…Surfers above all should be aware of the looming realities behind the principle of sustainability. Like swells, change comes out of the blue – out of spontaneous brilliance, accident, serendipity, and – necessity. And, to be honest, we know that this green shift is necessary. We believe that you surfers, our readers, are brilliant enough to support our efforts to create a more sustainably-produced (and even more excellent) surf magazine.” - Alex Dick-Read (publisher)

Scott Dickerson’s Bristol Bay images on mobile ad truck

The annual Alaska Federation of Natives Convention recently took place in Anchorage, Alaska. This event brings Alaskan natives from all over the state to Anchorage for a weekend. The non-profit Renewable Resources Coalition wanted to share a few messages with the attendees.

Kevin Co of Frontier Media Arts was tasked with developing the campaign just days before the event. The project in his own words :

“We decided that this would be a great time to use non-traditional media, so I called up the folks at Mobile Ad Alaska to see if we could rent out their truck. What we ended up with what can best be described as a mobile 10 sided billboard that could be moved around to target different flows of people throughout the event.”

Scott was honored by Kevin’s choice to work with his Bristol Bay photos on this project. Below is a short video by Kevin showing the finals steps of the project.

Scott Dickerson was assigned to photograph a real estate development near Homer, Alaska for Homer Seaside Properties. The resulting photos are being used in a variety of marketing materials including a full page ad in the Alaska Airlines magazine. The lead image is an aerial view of Stone Step Lake, which the development is named after, taken in the fall when the cottonwoods were golden and the years first snow had just fallen on the Kenai Mountains across Kachemak Bay. Along with the standard ground based and aerial work, Scott also created several lifestyle photos showing a couple canoeing on the lake with evening light on the Kenai Mountains.

Scott Dickerson was honored to work with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies on their 2008 Kachemak Bay CoastWalk to help motivate and educate the public about the importance of keeping our coastal beaches clean. This year marked the 19th annual Kachemak Bay CoastWalk organized by CACS and as usual resulted in removing over a ton of trash from our local beaches. Scott gave eight slide show presentations to elementary, middle school, and college students, as well as the general community. The photographs and words shared focused on three main areas of importance: The beauty and richness of our Alaskan coastlines, the incredible wildlife that depend on these clean beaches, and the fun outdoor adventures that we enjoy in these special places. As a professional photographer, avid surfer, and recovering commercial fisherman Scott clearly has a deep connection to the environmental stewardship of our coastal areas.

The Homer News reported in an article titled “Surfer-photographer to speak at CoastWalk kick-off

To highlight surfer support for clean beaches, Homer photographer and surfer Scott Dickerson speaks at local schools this month for CoastWalk presentations. Tonight from 7-8 p.m. CoastWalk gets started with a potluck kick-off at the CACS building off Lake Street. Dickerson does a presentation, “Snapshots: Surfing and Saving Alaska’s Coasts.”

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies also hired Scott to document a CoastWalk effort by local McNeil Canyon Elementary School. Below are several of the resulting images.
