Alaska Magazine came to Scott Dickerson when they needed to illustrate their ‘Every Alaskan Schould…’ series article featuring Kachemak Bay State Park. Scott grew up on the shores of Kachemak Bay in Homer, Alaska and enjoys frequent visits to Kachemak Bay State Park so the editors at Alaska were given a healthy selection of images to edit through. The chosen panoramic photo was created while kayak camping on Grewingk Lake working on a personal project. The second image shows a sea otter and sea kayakers on Kachemak Bay.

National Geographic Magazine published a conservation article about a controversial brown bear hunt in Katmai National Preserve. The Scott Dickerson photograph illustrating the piece shows a brown bear walking out of Kukaklek Lake with a salmon in its mouth moments before its death. On the bank behind the bear is a guide and two trophy hunters. The hunt is legally permitted, though many believe it’s ethically and scientifically wrong. If you are interested in seeing more you can visit an online gallery of Katmai Bear hunt photos here.
For an unknown reason several copies of the magazine I browsed did not contain the article.

Bristol Bay fisherman have a lot to be proud of. This tri-fold brochure produced by the Renewable Resources Coalition used four of Scott’s photos to help communicate to commercial fisherman that Bristol Bay’s wild salmon resources are being threatened by proposed mineral developments in the area. For several years Scott has been photographing the Bristol Bay region in an effort to give his viewers a glimpse into this remarkable environment. You can see several hundred of Scott’s Bristol Bay photographs in the online archive.
