The New York Times today published an article titled ‘Alaskan Road Trip, 500 feet up‘. The times hired Scott to photograph a flightseeing and beach landing adventure with Homer Air to illustrate the article. The assignment was a great success with excellent weather and professional pilots making some very dramatic Air to air shots possible. Along with the article the online version features a slideshow with eleven other images from the shoot.

Alaska Magazine selected several of Scott’s photos to illustrate a feature article on Richard Nelson. The article by Melissa DeVaughn, titled ‘Genuine Encounters’, profiles Nelson and his work on ‘Encounters’ a radio program that he creates (read the article online here). Scott has had the pleasure of being on several adventures around Alaska with Nelson over the years and also assisted Cinematographer Daniel Zatz in producing three video pieces with Nelson on camera. Please take a minute and visit the Encounters website and listen to one of the programs there if you have any interest in the wildlife and culture of Alaska you won’t be disappointed.

The October issue of Alaska Magazine featured a double page spread aerial photograph by Scott Dickerson. The image, taken in the spring, shows sea ice breaking up in Bristol Bay. The visual is striking as waves break the ice into smaller and smaller pieces. Viewed from an aerial perspective the process can be read like words on a page, albeit backwards in this case.

Scott Dickerson was assigned by the New York Times newspaper to photograph a midnight sun glacier hike in Girdwood, Alaska with Ascending Path. The thick gray overcast and drizzling rain conditions were far from ideal, but Scott did his best and the article ran with two images from the evening hike. The article was written by Bonnie Tsui.

The Surfer's Journal publishes ALASKAFOLIO - Alaskan surfing photos by Scott Dickerson.
The Surfer’s Path, an international surfing magazine, worked with Scott Dickerson to publish ALASKAFOLIO an eight page spread of photographs and words featuring Scott’s work in the Alaskan surf scene. The photographs are selection of previously unpublished highlights from several winter surf seasons. Scott was particularly excited to team up with with The Surfer’s Path for the debut of these unique photos because of the publications commitment not only to the spirit of surfing, but also the environment that surfers depend on.
From The Surfer’s Path website:
“The Surfer’s Path is the first (and, so far as we know, the only) truly “green” surf magazine. It’s printed on 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper (processed without chlorine bleach) with non-GMO soy inks. It was a move that – despite considerable extra expense – we simply had to make. It’s simple common sense: the survival of our surf spots is directly linked to the health of our rivers and streams…Surfers above all should be aware of the looming realities behind the principle of sustainability. Like swells, change comes out of the blue – out of spontaneous brilliance, accident, serendipity, and – necessity. And, to be honest, we know that this green shift is necessary. We believe that you surfers, our readers, are brilliant enough to support our efforts to create a more sustainably-produced (and even more excellent) surf magazine.” - Alex Dick-Read (publisher)

Alaska Magazine came to Scott Dickerson when they needed to illustrate their ‘Every Alaskan Schould…’ series article featuring Kachemak Bay State Park. Scott grew up on the shores of Kachemak Bay in Homer, Alaska and enjoys frequent visits to Kachemak Bay State Park so the editors at Alaska were given a healthy selection of images to edit through. The chosen panoramic photo was created while kayak camping on Grewingk Lake working on a personal project. The second image shows a sea otter and sea kayakers on Kachemak Bay.

National Geographic Magazine published a conservation article about a controversial brown bear hunt in Katmai National Preserve. The Scott Dickerson photograph illustrating the piece shows a brown bear walking out of Kukaklek Lake with a salmon in its mouth moments before its death. On the bank behind the bear is a guide and two trophy hunters. The hunt is legally permitted, though many believe it’s ethically and scientifically wrong. If you are interested in seeing more you can visit an online gallery of Katmai Bear hunt photos here.
For an unknown reason several copies of the magazine I browsed did not contain the article.

Alaska Magazine chose a Scott Dickerson photo for the double page lead to their 2008 Fishing Outlook. The photo was taken aboard the fishing charter boat Grand Aleutian captained by David Bayes during an early morning run out into Kachemak Bay, Alaska.
